Inspirational People in R.E.
Peter Benenson and Eric Baker were the original founders of
Amnesty International,an organisation that
works to protect justice, freedom, truth and dignity;
Peter was brought up in the Jewish faith
but later changed his religion to become a Roman Catholic. (Christian).
He believed every person has a right to choose their own religious views.
He campaigned to free people who were imprisoned for their political and religious beliefs and started Amnesty International in July, 1961.
Benenson and Baker created the 28 declarations of human rights that won them the
Nobel Peace Prize. These include
'The right to believe in whatever we like, to have a religion and to change it if we wish.'
You can read more about the declarations in this picture book.
