We are very proud to be an Outstanding Early Years Unit!

"Children get off to a flying start in Reception. The school is ambitious for all, but particularly effective with its youngest children. They have designed the curriculum with enough flexibility to be able to respond to children’s interests. Learning is exciting. Children learn new knowledge and concepts in interesting ways. This makes them curious. Children explore these concepts through a variety of activities and play. This helps to secure their understanding." Ofsted 2023

This term our topic is 'Where we live'. In this topic we will be exploring houses around the world and thinking about the differences and similarities between them. We will also look at our planet including the oceans and continents and see where our learning takes us from there! In our writing we will use what we have learnt to write about the houses we live in and then about houses from around the world. In maths, we will begin to explore number 11-20 and also numbers beyond 20. Using our ever extending understanding of number, we will begin to explore doubling, halving and sharing too.  We will be visiting Austen at central library again this term and will hopefully plan a trip to 'The Box Museum' also. More information to follow.

A very exciting term ahead for us in foundation .

In Foundation we have worked very hard to create an exciting and engaging learning environment. We value individuality in Foundation and we are excited to explore the children's interests and watch them learn and grow throughout the year.

Our Early Years Rationale

At Salisbury Road Primary, the Early Years Team believe that all children deserve an education rich in wonder, excitement, independence and memorable experiences. At Salisbury Road we believe children learn best through play in an environment that promotes creativity, curiosity and independence. Our ethos is to support children’s personal, social and emotional development so that they feel safe, secure, happy and ready to learn.

We recognise the importance of giving our children the best possible start to their education by planning and implementing teaching and learning opportunities that supports them in reaching their full potential and develop a love of learning. At Salisbury Road, we recognise the crucial role that Early Years education and educators have to play in providing firm foundations upon which the rest of a child’s education is successfully based.

Through the Early Years Curriculum, we provide children with a rich learning environment that builds on the children’s interests and develops their experiences of the world around them. We support the children in their transition into school and ensure that the start of the children’s learning journey is enjoyable for both the children and their families. We recognise that all children come into our setting with varied experiences and we work hard to provide equal learning opportunities to develop children’s understanding of the world around them and we have high expectations for all our children.

All about us

Underpinning all of our learning and time together is our school values. They are also linked to our Class Dojo rewards. We will learn about and celebrate examples of each value daily.

Our value this term is 'Unity'.

We will be discussing what it happiness means, as well as these 2 key questions.

What does unity mean to me?

How can I work with others to be united?

Information about Foundation

Phonics: Here at Salisbury Road, we teach phonics from the start. We will begin by listening to sounds and playing phonological awareness games. We will then begin working through the Read Write Inc scheme to learn all the individual letter sounds and begin to read simple CVC words. The children will be grouped according to their knowledge so the learning can be tailored to their needs.

Maths: We provide the children with a secure foundation of numbers 1-10. We learn about the composition of each number and talk about 'what we see' and 'how we see it'.  We will look at patterns in objects, colours and numbers and explore making our own patterns too. Oracy is at the heart of our maths sessions to enrich the children's vocabulary and make sure they are using full sentences.

Topic: We base our topics on the children's interests underpinned by the united learning curriculum.

Reading: Reading is a priority at our school. In foundation, we pride ourselves on promoting a life long love of reading. Reading is at the heart of everything we do in foundation so we encourage you to read with your child everyday. We have an exciting reading raffle where child could win the book of the term! All they need to do to be entered each week is to read at home at least 4 times each week. The more times they do, the more chances they have to win the book, so get reading!
