Class 5WE

Welcome to Class 5WE

Welcome to the Autumn Term in Year 5!

It has been lovely to welcome the children back to a school that feels more like normal.

Our main topic is the Victorians and our big question is: 'How does life as a child in Plymouth today compare to life as a Victorian child in Plymouth?' We are hoping the children will be interested in learning how life has evolved over time and will link this through many different subjects, skills and concepts.

Maths

In maths this year we will be revisiting key areas of learning in Year 4 and building on this with Year 5 learning. We will focus on place value with numbers up to 1,000,000. We will then turn our attention to the four key operations including addition and subtraction. We also ask that children spend time practising their times tables and using TTRS when at home. We need to know all of our times tables and division facts so that we can apply them across the Maths curriculum.

English

The first English unit will be based on our class reader which is GASLIGHT by Eloise Williams. During this unit we will start off with some SPaG reminders before moving into character and setting descriptions. The children will then create a piece of work based upon the story. We can't wait to read them.

Reading

Our Reading sessions will centre around focusing on the key skills of reading using the 'VIPERS' framework. We will use a range of texts linked to our topics and concentrate on our Year 5 target which is to make inferences about a text and justify our ideas using evidence from the text.

Other curriculum areas

Children will be studying materials and properties in science and conducting some experiments throughout the unit of work. In ICT we will be looking at keeping ourselves safe online by creating safe passwords.  In RE the key question is: 'What does it mean if God is Holy and loving?'

Other information

PE lessons are currently on a Monday, and other sessions will happen every now and then so please have PE kit in all week. Homework will be sent out on a Tuesday either on Teams or a paper copy will be sent and need to be in the following Monday. Reading their AR books will be really important and quizzes can be done throughout the day at a convenient time. Please record home reading in your reading diaries.

We also have some whole school fun events planned so look out for those!

Any questions please contact us via dojo or email.
