Class 5MT

Welcome to Class 5VW

Welcome to the Spring Term in Year 5!

Well it's not the start to 2021 we were expecting and most of us are learning online... but we will make the best of it and keep on learning.

Our main topic is Early Islamic Civilisations where we will be studying the ancient city of Baghdad - what a wonderful and interesting place it was!

In maths this year we will be revisiting key areas of learning in Year 4 and building on this with Year 5 learning. We will focus on place value with numbers up to 1,000,000. We will then turn our attention to the four key operations including addition and subtraction. We also ask that children spend time practising their times tables and using TTRS when at home. We need to know all of our times tables and division facts so that we can apply them across the Maths curriculum.

Due to moving online, we will be doing shorter units of work in English this term where we will really focus on refining our sentence structures and finding ways to make our writing interesting. We will keep concentrating on our Year 5 targets around writing noun phrases and relative clauses.

Our online Reading sessions will centre around focusing on the key skills of reading using the 'VIPERS' framework. We will use a range of tests linked to our topics and concentrate on our Year 5 target which is to make inferences about a text and justify our ideas using evidence from the text.

You can also request reading books from the school library that can be collected from reception .

Other curriculum areas

Children will study the Islamic Art using geometric patterns. In science we will spend time looking Earth and Space and then move on to exploring Forces. and their properties and hopefully conducting some fun experiments - if home learning permits! Spanish will be focussing on dates and school subjects.

Other information

We  have set out a timetable for online learning which consists of a mixture of online live lessons and some pre-recorded sessions. We also have other suggested activities that can be done at home including TTRockstars, daily reading (you can request reading books from school or use the Plymouth Library online platform) and not forgetting the importance of daily exercise.

We also have some whole school fun events planned so look out for those!

Any questions please contact us via dojo or email.
