Class 5LV

Welcome to Class 5LV

Welcome to Year 5, we can’t wait for this year and to have you all back in class. It’s been a while but we are all here to support you and make each day amazing. Our main topic will, this term, will be Victorian Plymouth where we will find out about the city and the surrounding areas during this era. It really is exciting, and we can’t wait to get started.

In maths this year we will be revisiting key areas of learning in Year 4 and building on this with Year 5 learning. We will focus on place value with numbers up to 1,000,000. We will then turn our attention to the four key operations including addition and subtraction. We also ask that children spend time practising their times tables and using TTRS when at home.

Our first unit of work will be linked to the picture book ‘The little wolves and the big, bad pig’ which is based on the original tradition tale. After this we will revisit key areas of grammar before beginning our next unit which will be liked to characters and descriptions. It promises to be exciting and allow children to use their amazing imaginations. We will also explore narrative poems and write our own linked to our class novel. Where possible we will link  our ideas to our overall topic of Victorians.

Our class novel this term will be ‘Gaslight’ by the amazing author Eloise Williams. It is set in the Victorian era and is a lovely book that has many twists and turns.

Our whole class reading sessions will include extracts from Gaslight but also other topics related to Victorians. We will also study poems such as The Highwayman and My mother saw a dancing bear. Throughout all lessons we will focus on the VIPERS skills to support our reading comprehension and understanding.

Other curriculum areas

Children will study the artist Paul Kelpe as part of art lessons and will produce a watercolour piece. In science we will spend time looking at materials and their properties and hopefully conducting some fun experiments. Our history and geography will link to Plymouth a local study and we will take a virtual walk around the many Victorian buildings and sites around Plymouth including the Gaspipe on the Barbican.
