Autumn Term 2019
Welcome back to an exciting new year. We are looking forward to the term ahead filled with lots of fantastic learning. We are looking forward to getting to know each other and working on our values of Happiness and Respect.
Our learning focus this term is History and Geography based and we will learning about our local area through the Victorian times and trade within Plymouth.
Please be assured that if you have any questions or concerns we will always be willing to listen and will do our best to ensure that your child is happy in school.
This term we will develop our writing skills through a range of genres including Legends, Information texts and Narrative Poetry. We will work on sentence structure and vocabulary not only in English but also throughout all lessons. In reading, we will unpick a variety of texts using our inference skills. During our English lessons (and throughout other subjects) it is imperative we continue to focus on our handwriting and presentation. We will work hard on achieving our pen licences and we compete against the other Year 5 classes to see who can achieve the most – we can do this!
We will be focussing on reading, writing and place value of numbers up to 1,000,000. We will also work on rounding numbers to 10, 100 and 1000. We will work with decimal numbers comparing and ordering them and read and write Roman numerals up to 1000. We will continue using formal written methods to add and subtract numbers, including decimals. We will practise our multiplication facts daily attempting to increase fast recall of these facts. As a school we use TTRS and ask that the children practise at home if possible.
This term we will be learning about our local area during the Victorian times. We will find out fascinating facts about how Plymouth was affected by the growth of the industrial revolution and the positive and negative impacts this had on the three towns that made up Plymouth. We will also look at trade within Plymouth and how complex supply chains can be. We will research the raw materials and goods that are exported and imported from Plymouth and show that due to the global nature of trade the choice we make as consumers can directly affect people all over the world. In art, we will compare artists from the Victorian era and use their works to create our own pieces and in DT, we will be making our own toys (exciting and daunting in equal measure). In computing, we will be developing our digital literacy skills around strong passwords and the importance of these, spotting spam and how photos can be altered to change our perceptions of beauty and health. We are excited about our Science topic of materials this term. We will look in depth at all aspects of materials including dissolving, separating mixtures and solutions, reversible and irreversible changes that will include using vinegar and bicarbonate of soda and burning! We will give you more information about this nearer the time but we promise we will send the children home in one piece!
Homework will be set on a Tuesday and returned the following Monday. We will set either Maths, Spag or English work and it should last around 30 minutes. Once or twice a term we will also set more creative homework tasks – so get ready to think outside the box. In addition to this, your child will need to read four times at home and this will need to be recorded with an adult’s signature in their reading record. Please continue to encourage your child every day. Our aim is that children complete an AR quiz each week.
We will be learning spellings daily in school with a test once a week on a Friday. These words will be linked to the Year 5 spelling patterns as well as the Year 5/6 NC required word lists.
We will have PE on Tuesday and Wednesday. Please ensure that PE kit is in school at the start of each term.
