4TP
Welcome to Mrs Pannell's Class
Welcome back! We hope you have all had a fantastic break over Christmas and New year. This term promises to be a fun packed and busy time. Towards the end of the first half term, year 4 will be going to the life centre every day to take part in a half an hour swimming lesson. We know that some children will be very excited and others very nervous, the swimming teachers at the life centre are fantastic with the children and will ease any worries. We hope that the children will complete a 25 metre swim and a water safety session by the end of the three weeks.
We are looking forward to all of the exciting learning, which will be centred around Ancient Greece.
History Knowledge Organiser
Maths
This term, we will be looking at discovering equivalent fractions, solving number problems and different measures. Additionally, we will be focusing on the learning of times tables up to twelve, in preparation for the statutory multiplication table test at the end of year 4.
As a school we use TTRS and we will be celebrating the children’s success in class. Please practise at home as this is the key to knowing these facts inside and out. It is truly amazing how much easier the children find maths when these key facts are learnt.
Writing
In writing, we will be learning how to create a balanced argument and use this technique to help write a discussion text. Following this, we will use the knowledge we have gained about the Ancient Greeks, to write exciting myths. While we will be learning new grammar and writing techniques, it is vitally important that we continue to focus on handwriting and presentation. Hopefully, many of your children will earn their pen license by the end of the year!
Reading
At Salisbury Road, we use the VIPERS approach to the teaching of reading. We will be looking at one text over a course of a week, focusing on a variety of reading skills, such as vocabulary, inference, prediction, explanation, retrieval and summarising.
In addition, we will continue to use the AR reading scheme, which you will be able to track from home if you sign up for AR Home Connect. While we would love all children to read daily - what is most important is that children develop a love of reading and choose to read for pleasure. Children will have the opportunity to read in school everyday and will be expected to read at home at least three times a week, and aim to quiz at least once a week.
We appreciate your ongoing support with reading at home, it really does have a huge impact on your child's progress.
Homework
Homework will be set each week on a Tuesday (to be handed in on the following Monday) and will mostly consist of an English or Maths activity lasting no longer than about 20 minutes, in addition to reading, spelling practice and numberwork on most days. Once or twice a term, we will also embrace opportunities to set more creative homework tasks – so get your glue and paint at the ready!
Spellings
Each Friday, your child will receive up to 10 spellings, which they will be tested on the following Friday. These words will be linked to the year 4 spelling patterns as well as the year 3 and 4 National Curriculum required words list.
Please help and encourage your child to learn their spellings.
PE
We will be using the Real PE scheme to work on the three fundamental skills, agility, balance and coordination and their application in a range of sports. We are also fortunate to have the expertise of Mr Morgan who specialises in the delivery of physical education to children.
We will have PE twice a week on a Tuesday and Thursday. Please ensure that your child has their PE kit in school every day.
