Welcome to Miss Glover's Year 2 Class Page

Welcome to the Summer Term! What a term it is set to be!

We have already started our English topic focus and have been reading stories written by the children's author, Oliver Jeffers. Click the link to find out more about him and his works

We will be using his stories as inspiration for our own writing. Click this link to listen to the story, Up and Down. It's a wonderful story about friendship and we will be using it to write our own stories.

In the second half of the Summer term we will become historians and learn all about The Great Fire of London.

We will learn about how this significant event in English history has impacted on lives today. It is going to be so interesting!

Below is a knowledge organiser that outlines some of the key information that we will be learning.

This term we will be looking at a variety of writing. We will look at writing narratives, letters, a story based on a historical event and poetry.   In handwriting, we will be continuing to learn how to join our letters and will practise the joins we know in the words that we most commonly use.  In Year 2,  it is really important that we continue to focus on handwriting and presentation.

We will revise our work on the four calculations and consolidate our learning on how to exchange tens and ones when adding and subtracting. We will continue to develop our recall and application of the 2s, 5s and 10s times tables. Along with this, we will further deepen our understanding of shape, space and measure and consider how to use mathematical language to talk about our learning in these areas of maths. We will have a push on being able to tell the time. Here is a link to practise:

Homework will be set each week on a Tuesday ( to be handed in on the following Monday) and will mostly consist of an English or Maths activity lasting no longer than about 20 minutes,  in addition to reading, spelling practice and numberwork on most days.  Once or twice a term, we will also embrace opportunities to set more creative homework tasks  – so get your glue and paint at the ready!

Please read – Every day!

While I would love all children to read daily - what is most important is that children develop a love of reading and choose to read for pleasure, as a school we encourage children to read for 10-20 minutes on most days. We  would like pupils to have changed their book at least once per week. Please come and have a chat if you have any questions or would like to know ways to engage your child with reading at home.

We will be learning spellings daily in school with a test once a week on a Friday. These words will be linked to the year 2 spelling patterns as well as the year 2 NC required word lists.

We will have PE on Tuesdays.  Please ensure that PE kit is in school at the start of each week and is left at school during the week as it may be needed as last minute opportunities arise.
