Welcome to Miss Glover's Class
Welcome back to a wonderful new year. This term promises to be a fun packed and busy time.
We are all looking forward to getting to know each other and continuing with our learning, working on this terms theme of Happiness.
Our learning focus this term is History and Geography based and we will be learning all about Plymouth and the local area. We will learn about how the geography of Plymouth has impacted on its history. We will look at Plymouth and how it has changed over the last few centuries. A particular focus is comparing Victorian Plymouth and Plymouth nowadays. In geography, we will learn about where Plymouth is located in relation to the rest of the UK and in the world.
We use knowledge organisers to help us with our learning. Below is our geography one for this term.
We will have PE twice a week on a Monday and Tuesday. Please ensure that PE kit is in school at the start of each term.
We are all looking forward to the term ahead and know that we will have a fantastic time. Please be assured that if you have any questions or concerns we will always be willing to listen and will do our best to ensure that your child is happy in school.
This term we will develop our writing skills, through a range of genres including Poetry, Traditional Tales and Explanation texts. We will develop our use of descriptive vocabulary and later on our characterisation and setting descriptions. We will work on sentence structure and vocabulary not only in English but throughout all lessons. While we will be learning new grammar and writing techniques, it is vitally important that we continue to focus on handwriting and presentation.
We will focus this term on reading and writing and the place value of numbers up to 100. We will unpick how two-digit numbers are made up of tens and ones and talk about the value of individual digits. This will help us when we learn how to add and subtract two numbers. This term we will focus on how to add and subtract a single-digit number from a two-digit number and begin to learn how to add and subtract two two-digit numbers. To compliment this, we will learn how to record this formally.
In order to deepen our understanding of what we learn, we will complete mathematical activities which require us to apply our learning in a range of contexts.
Homework will be set each week on a Tuesday ( to be handed in on the following Monday) and will mostly consist of an English or Maths activity lasting no longer than about 15 minutes, in addition to reading, spelling practice and numberwork on most days. Once or twice a term, we will also embrace opportunities to set more creative homework tasks – so get your glue and paint at the ready!
Please read – Every day!
While I would love all children to read daily - what is most important is that children develop a love of reading and choose to read for pleasure. As a school we encourage children to read for 10 minutes on most days.
With your support, we will encourage the children to read daily, supported by the whole school reading incentive. Remember, if your child reads four times a week at home, and this is recorded in their reading record with an adult's signature, then they will be in with a chance of winning a book. This book will link to an area of learning we have completed in the classroom.
We will be learning spellings daily in school with a test once a week on a Friday. These words will be linked to the year 2 spelling patterns as well as the year 1 and 2 NC required word lists. See links below.
