Welcome to Mrs Elshaw's Year 1 Class Page
Welcome to Year 1 – It is going to be a great year full of fun and lots of exciting learning opportunities!
We hope that you have all had a lovely break and are ready for the Spring term!
Our value this term is 'Aspiration'
We will be discussing what aspiration means, as well as these two key questions
What do I want to achieve?
How can I work with others to achieve my goals?
Please be assured that if you have any questions or concerns we will always be willing to listen and will do our best to ensure that your child is happy and thriving in school.
This term we will be developing our writing skills through writing instructions using bossy verbs. We will also be exploring and writing stories about journeys using a beginning, middle and end. We will continue to work on the core writing skills during the Read Write Inc hour. We have been learning a new style of handwriting - pre cursive! It has been tricky to begin with but we can already see some beautiful letter formation. We will continue to work on these during the Spring term and focus on putting the pre cursive letters into words and using them in all our writing.
We will continue to build our number knowledge and working within larger numbers to a 100 including place value of numbers. We will learn to count in 2s, 5s and 10s to help us as we move into learning about multiplication. We will also be learning to recognise, use, add and subtract money. We are going to very busy mathematicians!
Explorers - Topic
We will be learning about three famous explorers, comparing them and looking at how and where they travelled around the world. We will learn about the chronology of events from the past and use graphic organisers to help us remember the facts.
There will be lots of opportunities to be creative and arty threaded through our school week as well! Our focus this term will be exploring collaging techniques to finally create an explorer inspired piece.
Homework will be set each week on a Tuesday ( to be handed in on the following Monday) and will mostly consist of an English, Phonics or Maths activity lasting no longer than about 20 minutes, in addition to reading and spelling practice on most days. Once or twice a term, we will also embrace opportunities to set more creative homework tasks – so get your glue and paint at the ready!
Please read – Every day!
While we would love all children to read daily - what is most important is that children develop a love of reading and choose to read for pleasure, as a school we encourage children to read for 10-20 minutes on most days. We will change books on Monday, Wednesday and Friday in Year 1 and the children are responsible for putting their finished book in the book tray to be changed.
Please come and have a chat if you have any questions or would like to know ways to engage your child with reading at home or further develop their comprehension skills through questioning.
We will be learning spellings daily in school with a test once a week on a Monday. These words will be linked to the year 1 common exception words outlined in the National Curriculum. They will also include high frequency words that they read and spell often.
We will have PE once a week on a Thursday. Please ensure that PE kit is in school at the start of each week and is left at school during the week, as it may be needed as last minute opportunities arise.
