Welcome to Miss Hughes' Year 1 Class Page
Welcome to Year 1 - It’s going to be a great year full of fun and lots of exciting learning opportunities!
The Year 1 team are excited to be part of your learning journey in year 1 - and what a journey it will be!
Please be assured that if you have any questions or concerns we will always be willing to listen and will do our best to ensure that your child is happy and thriving in school.
This term we will continue developing our writing skills, exploring and writing stories with familiar settings and using adjectives to make our writing more exciting. We will be continue to use our sentence superheroes and phonics to write fantastic stories and captions. We will also be starting to use cursive handwriting more independently to strive to become a Super Scriber!
We will be building our number knowledge and working within larger numbers to a 100. We will be using our knowledge of addition and subtraction to help us solve problems and explore how to use inverse operations to solve missing number problems. We are going to very busy mathematicians!
Amazing Animals - Topic
Our topic is Amazing Animals, we will be exploring a range of animals, naming and describing them using scientific vocabulary. We will be discussing the similarities and differences between the different types of animal and will also explore their habitats and look at the food these different animals eat. Their will be lots of opportunities to be creative and arty threaded through our school week as well!
Homework will be set each week on a Tuesday ( to be handed in on the following Monday) and will mostly consist of an English, Phonics or Maths activity lasting no longer than about 20 minutes, in addition to reading and spelling practice on most days. Once or twice a term, we will also embrace opportunities to set more creative homework tasks – so get your glue and paint at the ready!
Please read – Every day!
While I would love all children to read daily - what is most important is that children develop a love of reading and choose to read for pleasure, as a school we encourage children to read for 10-20 minutes on most days. We will change books on Monday, Wednesday and Friday in Year 1 and the children are responsible for putting their finished book in the book tray to be changed.
Please come and have a chat if you have any questions or would like to know ways to engage your child with reading at home or further develop their comprehension skills through questioning.
We will be learning spellings daily in school with a test once a week on a Friday. These words will be linked to the year 1 common exception words outlined in the NC as well as high frequency words that they will read and spell often.
We will have PE once a week on a Thursday. Please ensure that PE kit is in school at the start of each week and is left at school during the week as it may be needed as last minute opportunities arise.
