Welcome to Mrs Elshaw's Year 1 Class Page
Welcome to Year 1 - It’s going to be a great year full of fun and lots of exciting learning opportunities!
We hope that you have all had a lovely summer holiday and are now looking forward to a new school year, the Year 1 team are excited to be part of your learning journey in year 1 - and what a journey it will be!
Please be assured that if you have any questions or concerns we will always be willing to listen and will do our best to ensure that your child is happy and thriving in school.
This term we will be developing our writing skills, through writing labels, lists and captions . We will be meeting the sentence superheroes and using our phonics to write fantastic labels and captions. We will also be learning a new style of handwriting - cursive! It will be tricky to begin with but if we persevere our handwriting and presentation will be beautiful.
We will be building our number knowledge and working within larger numbers to a 100. We will also be learning to count in 10s and use this to support our knowledge of tens and ones. Finally, we will be using all this learning to help us add and subtract 1 digit numbers. We are going to very busy mathematicians!
Brilliant Buildings - Topic
Our topic for term 1 is Brilliant Buildings and we will be exploring the local community and the purpose of the different buildings around us, whilst also exploring exciting buildings from around the world. Our class story will be Iggy Peck the Architect, we will link this to our learning in Science, which will be all about materials. We will explore a range of materials and their properties, thinking about what they are used for and why. Their will be lots of opportunities to be creative and arty threaded through our school week as well!
Homework will be set each week on a Tuesday ( to be handed in on the following Monday) and will mostly consist of an English, Phonics or Maths activity lasting no longer than about 20 minutes, in addition to reading and spelling practice on most days. Once or twice a term, we will also embrace opportunities to set more creative homework tasks – so get your glue and paint at the ready!
Please read – Every day!
While I would love all children to read daily - what is most important is that children develop a love of reading and choose to read for pleasure, as a school we encourage children to read for 10-20 minutes on most days. We will change books on Monday, Wednesday and Friday in Year 1 and the children are responsible for putting their finished book in the book tray to be changed.
Please come and have a chat if you have any questions or would like to know ways to engage your child with reading at home or further develop their comprehension skills through questioning.
We will be learning spellings daily in school with a test once a week on a Friday. These words will be linked to the year 1 common exception words outlined in the NC as well as high frequency words that they will read and spell often.
We will have PE once a week on a Thursday. Please ensure that PE kit is in school at the start of each week and is left at school during the week as it may be needed as last minute opportunities arise.
